What are Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown insects that feed on the blood of humans. Measuring between 4 to 7 mm, these pests have a flat and oval body, are wingless, and live in cracks and crevices of furniture, upholstered furniture, mattresses, and box springs. Bed bugs go through three stages of life: egg, nymph, and adult. It takes about six weeks for them to reach adulthood, at which point they begin feeding on human blood during the night.

Development and Behaviours

Bed bugs feed for about 10-15 minutes, taking a blood meal from their sleeping host. After feeding, they digest the human blood for several days, hiding in areas such as mattress seams, box springs, or furniture. While bed bug bites are often mistaken for mosquito bites or stinging insect bites, they can lead to more severe reactions in people with allergies.

Depending on the degree of the infestation, they can also be found hiding in cracks in walls, ground, and furniture, behind picture frames and under wallpaper.

A bed bug can survive up to a year without feeding under optimal conditions. However, this does not mean they won’t seek out new sources of blood (human or animal blood) in a home or commercial property. Bed bugs can easily spread throughout spaces, especially during heavy infestations, hiding behind walls, inside outlets, and under carpets.

Common Signs of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs often leave behind subtle signs of their presence, which can be found quickly by an experienced technician. Early detection is crucial for swift bed bug removal.

  • Blood spots: Small, rusty spots of blood on sheets, pillows, or furniture.
  • Fecal matter: Dark stains resembling small specks, often found on mattresses or around bed frames.
  • Itchy bites: Red, itchy welts on the skin that often appear in clusters or lines, typically after sleeping.
  • Eggs and shells: Tiny, pale-colored eggs or shed skins found in mattress seams, furniture, or carpeting.
  • Musty odor: A strong, unpleasant, musty odor from bed bug pheromones in heavily infested areas.
  • Live bed bugs: Seeing live, reddish-brown bed bugs in crevices, cracks, or furniture upholstery.

Where to Bed Bugs Hide?

  • Verify every component of the bed: the mattress, the box springs, zippers, seams, tufting of upholstery, behind and around the headboard.
  • Check the furniture and walls, furniture frames and upholstering, using an object with a hard corner such as a credit card.
  • Check behind paintings, posters, pictures, mirrors and around moldings, woodwork, baseboards and window frames.
  • Inspect cracks in plaster and wallpaper that is peeling off.
  • Look very closely at electrical outlets, lamp switches, telephones, and clocks as well as carpets and rugs, especially around beds.
  • At a hotel, do not put your luggage on the ground or the bed: store them in the bathtub or on a luggage stand.

I have bed bugs, what should I do?

If you find bedbugs in your home, do not hesitate to contact Eaglebugs. Our exterminators will give you advice tailored to your situation to prepare you for the intervention. Treatment against bed bugs is a safe, targeted and environmentally responsible procedure.

  • Don’t throw away furniture: Bed bugs can be eliminated from all your items with the right bed bug removal services.
  • Don’t apply any insecticide yourself: In addition to representing a risk for your health and that of your loved ones in the case of improper use, most pesticides available on the market have a repellent effect. This means that the product emits vapors that are strong enough to repel the other bed bugs in places farther away, which complicates the pest management.
  • Call an exterminator immediately: Even if you find just one bed bug, don’t wait. The sooner you call, the quicker we can act to contain the infestation with bed bug control methods.

Professional Bed Bug Heat Treatment

EagleBugs offers bed bug heat treatment, a highly effective method for eliminating bed bugs and their eggs. This treatment for bed bugs uses specialized equipment to raise the temperature in your home or commercial property to levels lethal to bed bugs. Heat treatment is one of the most effective bed bug treatment options, especially for heavy infestations, and meets Health Canada standards for safety.

How Can I Prevent Bed Bug Infestations?

Many preventive measures can be adopted to avoid bed bugs in your house. By removing the opportunities for them to penetrate your home, you can avoid needing a bed bug cleaning service:

  • Never recover mattresses, upholstered furniture or bedroom furniture left on the side of the road.
  • If you move into a new building, ask the owner if there’s a management policy regarding bed bugs. In certain municipalities, bed bugs are insects that are subject to mandatory reporting.
  • Before signing a contract with movers or a vehicle rental agency, ask about the measures they take in regard to bed bugs.
  • Once you’re moved into your new home, go the extra mile! Vacuum everywhere before moving your furniture and other belongings inside. Throw the vacuum cleaner bags outside in closed garbage cans. Check the baseboards at the bottoms of walls, electric baseboard heaters and other places where a small insect that has the shape and size of a flat apple seed could hide. In the bedrooms, inspect electrical outlets and mouldings for bed bug excrement. Call your owner immediately in case of doubt; it will prevent you from appearing to be responsible for the infestation.
  • In buildings, bed bugs can travel from one dwelling to the next: be vigilant the first few weeks!

Are Bed Bug Bites Dangerous for Humans?

Bed bug bites are generally not dangerous as they don't transmit diseases, but they can cause red, itchy welts similar to mosquito bites, and some individuals may experience more severe allergic reactions. In rare cases, these reactions can be serious, requiring medical attention. While the physical effects are usually mild, the psychological impact, including anxiety and sleep disturbances, can significantly reduce quality of life. To prevent these issues, it's important to seek help from professional bed bug exterminators to eliminate infestations effectively.

What should I do after the treatment?

  • Stay in your room! Don’t move to another room, as surviving bed bugs might follow you, spreading the infestation.
  • Protect your mattress! Use bed bug-proof slipcovers to wrap your mattress and box springs for at least one year.
  • Wash items! Wash clothing, bedding, and other fabrics in hot water and dry them on high heat to kill any remaining bed bugs.
  • Use white or pale-colored sheets! It will be easier to spot any bed bugs.
  • Vaccuum regularly! Continue vacuuming your home for several weeks after the treatment to catch any remaining pests.
  • Keep an eye out! Inspect regularly to detect the presence of bed bugs
